Discover loft-style living at The North Beach Malt House, a historic landmark condominium development in San Francisco's vibrant North Beach neighborhood. Located at 411-445 Francisco Street, San Francisco, CA 94133, this unique mid-rise community blends industrial heritage with modern luxury living in one of the city's most beloved neighborhoods.
The North Beach Malt House is a historic San Francisco landmark originally built in the 1860s as a malting factory and brewery that operated for over 40 years. The centerpiece building at 445 Francisco Street was owned by the Bauer & Schweitzer Malting Company and was nearly destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Owner George W. Bauer, a UC Berkeley graduate and California Naval Militia rear admiral, rebuilt the structure using concrete slabs fortified with steel girders, completing the renovation in 1908. The facility supplied malt to Bay Area breweries, including the renowned Anchor Brewing Company, until closing in 1981.
After falling into disrepair and serving as a filming location for movies and TV shows including Nash Bridges, the historic site was transformed into luxury condominiums in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Designed by MBH Architects with a focus on historic preservation, the development preserves as much of the original structure as possible, including the iconic two-story grain silos, creating a European-style residential community completed in 2001.
The North Beach Malt House comprises four modernist/industrial mid-rise buildings built around a landscaped grassy courtyard with walking paths and a sculptural cobblestone waterfall fountain. The development features 88 unique loft-style condominium units ranging from 800 to 1,600 square feet, with individualized architectural elements that celebrate the building's industrial heritage.
Residences feature dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows, exposed concrete walls, open floor plans, soaring cathedral ceilings, skylights, mezzanine levels perfect for home office or living space, European oak wide-plank hardwood floors, modern kitchens with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops, stone countertops, butler's pantries in select units, spa-style bathrooms, ample closet space with built-ins, in-unit washer and dryer, and abundant natural light throughout.
The Malt House offers primarily 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom loft condos ranging from approximately 989 to 1,534 square feet, with some 1-bedroom and 3-bedroom units available. The crown jewel is a 1,515-square-foot penthouse situated atop seven stories.
