Caledonia Street and New Town

This seven-block section of Sausalito, featuring Caledonia Street, is a favorite among locals. Running parallel to Bridgeway at the base of the hill, Caledonia Street is home to Sausalito’s only hardware store, several dry cleaners, small specialty grocers, an old-school barber shop, and one of the best gift and card shops in the Bay Area. This area also boasts more restaurants and bars per block than downtown Sausalito, making it a lively spot for dining and entertainment.

Why “New Town”?

Sausalito’s original settlement at the southern edge of the city is known as Old Town. After the arrival of the railroad in the 1870s, the city expanded into a northern valley, which became known as New Town. Despite being over 130 years old, New Town is still considered the “new” part of Sausalito compared to Old Town’s 180-year history.

The Real Downtown

Caledonia Street is considered the true downtown of Sausalito by locals. This area, developed significantly during World War II, originally catered to the middle class and has since become a community hub with businesses serving local needs. Today, Caledonia Street is where residents spend most of their shopping and community time, with beloved businesses like Waterstreet Hardware thriving thanks to a tight-knit community.

Caledonia Street is the heart of Sausalito, evident in its friendly vibe and annual parades and celebrations. It lights up for holidays, hosting events like Fourth of July and Halloween.
