1050 Green Street San Francisco | George A. Bos Apartments - Historic Russian Hill

Experience timeless elegance at 1050 Green Street, a distinguished Neoclassical Revival landmark on Russian Hill's prestigious "Paris Block." Designed by renowned architect Lewis P. Hobart in 1913, this historic five-story condominium building is recognized as one of San Francisco's most architecturally significant residences and contributes to the Russian Hill Paris Block Architectural District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1987.

Historic Architecture & The Paris Block

1050 Green Street, also known as the George A. Bos Apartments, stands as an elegant example of Classical Revival architecture with a distinctive Parisian aesthetic rarely found in San Francisco. Designed for civil engineer George A. Bos, this five-story stuccoed brick building is set back from the street behind a meticulously landscaped formal lawn and garden, creating a gracious European ambiance unique among San Francisco condominiums.

The building features perfectly symmetrical facade design with five bays, a centered pedimented portico with paired Tuscan columns and pilasters, shallow modillioned cornice, sloping tile roof, decorative wrought-iron balconies, and exquisite period architectural details throughout. This rare formal garden setting and Classical Revival design helped earn the 1000 block of Green Street its designation as the "Paris Block."

About Architect Lewis P. Hobart

Lewis Parsons Hobart (1873-1954) was one of San Francisco's most distinguished architects. A graduate of UC Berkeley who studied at the American Academy in Rome and École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Hobart came to San Francisco in 1906 to help rebuild the city after the Great Earthquake and Fire. His notable works include Grace Cathedral on Nob Hill, the California Academy of Sciences, numerous Hillsborough and Burlingame estates, and downtown San Francisco office buildings. Hobart became the first President of the San Francisco Arts Commission in 1932 and served on the Board of Architects for the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition.
